Stockport County Community Foundation was delighted to be invited to the National League Trust very first walking football tournament which took place at the Wembley Power League London on Sunday 14th August.

The Community Foundation have been developing this ever increasing popular activity for over 18 months running  weekly sessions for men and women aged 50 and over every Friday at Power League Stockport. The main aims and objectives of the sessions are very much based on a social and exercise aspect offering everyone the chance to come along and watch or to participate if they feel comfortable. At the end of each weekly session refreshments are provided along with the opportunity for the players to talk and unwind after being put through their paces by the coaches!

When the opportunity was offered by The National League Trust to enter their competition everyone involved was very keen to be part of the day. The Community Foundation entered two teams to represent Stockport County at Wembley. The day started early for the 14 players and staff who arrived at Edgeley Park at 8.30am to make the long journey down to London in the club minibus. On arrival at Wembley the players got changed and were ready and proud to wear the shirt and represent Stockport County. It was very pleasing for us to enter one mixed squad, in fact the only mixed squad in the tournament! The Community Foundation were very happy to fly the flag for Stockport County and the North of England, being the only team from our region.

The competition was organised in a two group format with each team having five fixtures lasting 12 minutes. Both teams acquitted themselves well during the group games considering this was their first tournament since the Community Foundation set this project up 18 months ago. It was clear that the other teams were far more experienced in playing competitive fixtures and included many ‘younger players’ Both teams unfortunately exited the competition at the semi final stage and though naturally disappointed, they had represented the football club very well and had a great time! Afterwards during the formalities of the cup presentations it was pleasing for the teams to get a special mention from the National League for making the long journey from Stockport to take part in their first tournament.

Colin who took part in the tournament and a key member of the team commented "To have the opportunity to take part in this competition and represent Stockport County is something I won't forget for a long time. The day from start to finish was so memorable for me personally and I know everyone else felt the same.  I honestly have nothing but praise for the walking football programme and the impact the sessions have had on me both physically and more importantly mentally as I have made new friends and look forward to every Friday and being part of a great friendly team”

The team arrived back at Edgeley Park just before 11pm and the players made their tired but very happy way home as the day came to an end but the memories will last forever!

Community Foundation Manager Dave Wardle said "We were delighted to be offered the opportunity to take part in the tournament but the day was much more than just football. To see and hear the players recounting their football stories was something that will stay with me for a long time! We are delighted to offer this programme to adults in our community as we continue to work hard on behalf of Stockport County”

Stockport County Community Foundation remains extremely committed to offering a complete range of sporting activities for children and adults right across the borough regardless of age or ability. We aim to spread the name of Stockport County far and wide and bring new supporters to Edgeley Park to become part of the County family!
