Stockport
County's Community Foundation who champion County in the communities of
Stockport, Tameside and Derbyshire have overseen a huge increase in participants
in all its projects this year. But it's not
just the children, young people and those in its flagship disability work
which have had fun and reaped the benefits of Stockport County's work.
The County Community team has
taken great strides in it’s project to get the over fifties engaged in
healthy projects for fun and exercise. Walking Football has continued
apace in 2016 since County sent the only North Of England team to
represent our great club in the Walking Football tournament finals at Wembley
this summer.
As part of an initiative by local business Robinsons, Sheila Barlow from the
Armoury, Edgeley was keen to make a donation to a local charity. After
suggestions from her customers she chose the Community Foundation who will use
the money to help support their ever growing walking football project.
Helen Foster-Grime, Vice Chairman of Stockport County Community Foundation said
“For years The Armoury has been a popular meeting place for Stockport
County fans who always receive a warm welcome from Sheila and her team and
we would like to thank Sheila for her kind gesture of support."
Walking Football takes place currently at Stockport Power League on Fridays
from 11am and often sees County favorites’ like Manager Jim Gannon and players
including Lewis Montrose dropping by to join in the fun.
Community Foundation Director, Mark Sanderson added, “The project is designed
to engage people from Stockport and the surrounding boroughs in healthy
fitness and exercise but it's also seen many friendships formed with great
social outings and attracts new people from everywhere each week."
There is no cost to the participants in County's Walking Football and spectators
are welcome or can just join in the warm up until they feel more confident
to join in. If you fancy something a bit different on a Friday why not
give it a whirl!
