Everyone at Stockport County Community Foundation is immensely proud of the Stockport County Walking Football teams after their terrific performance in the I Wish I'd Tried Tournament on Sunday 11th June. We're delighted with both teams' progression over the past 12 months, demonstrated excellently in this tournament.
Both teams made it to the semi final, missing out on the final by penalties and one goal respectively, before competing with each other for fourth place.
The Foundation's Disability Development Officer - Adrian Rigby-Bates - was delighted. He said "The Walking Football Group at Stockport County Community Foundation has been running for nearly two years, it's a real pleasure to have seen the group grow in numbers, approaching twenty senior citizens, offering the opportunity for ladies and gentlemen above the age of 50 to be able to attend sessions at Powerleague Heaton Mersey and participate in physical activity and matches. Walking football has provided them with the opportunity to not only play football but to build personal friendships and, in some instances, it's been life changing."
Adrian went on to say "recently, the walking football team entered two teams into the I Wish I'd Tried Walking Football Social Tournament at Stockport Sports Village and both managed to reach the semi final, which was a marvellous achievement, highlighting the group's success as well as being a fabulous confidence booster for both of the teams. Following this, we are hoping to enter many more competitions so that they can continue their fantastic progression in the future."
