Stockport County Walking Football Team were delighted to be presented with a brand-new team kit funded by the local Tesco Extra at Portwood.

Claire Walton, Community Champion for the local Tesco Extra store in Stockport made a special visit to the recent County versus Chorley home game to present the County Walking Footballers and team managers Adrian Bates and Luke Jones with their new kit at half time on the pitch. The walking football team then took to the field of play at the half time interval, cheered on by over 3,000 County fans, in what proved to be an end to end match with an inspiring performance resulting in a 2-0 victory to the roar of the Cheadle End!

Adrian Bates, County Walking Football Manager who attended the presentation said:

“It’s amazing the support that Claire Walton and Tesco Portwood provides to the many charities across the local area. We are very grateful to them for funding our new kit which means everything to our walking football team. The walking football players who are reconnecting with their love of football, meet weekly for an hour and a half on Friday morning at the Power League in Stockport and take part in our coaching, warm - up and match. This is as much a social event as a physical activity, where they can enjoy tea, coffee and a biscuit and a chat with friends. They all really enjoy it and have a great deal of fun together!”

Claire Walton, Community Champion at Tesco Portwood added:

“As a store we feel part of our local community and it is so humbling to be able to give something back to Stockport County Community Foundations Walking Football team by providing them with a new kit. This charity is making such a positive difference to people’s lives in providing senior citizens with not only the opportunity to take part in physical activity but to get out in the local community and to socialise and make new friends. Some of the adults who attend the group have been lonely, low in confidence, had family losses, found themselves isolated, had weight issues and just not wanted to leave their home. But having come to the walking football now have a different goal and outlook and in some cases, this can be life changing.”
